Since External Examiners are remunerated for their work, they are technically considered casual workers and hence temporary employees of Aston University. Accordingly, in compliance with UK law, they must be able to demonstrate to Aston their right to work in the UK. Hence, before they first attend an Examination Board at Aston University, the relevant Programme Director (or appropriate nominee) must ensure that the external brings their passport (or any other valid and relevant documents) with them. When the External arrives at Aston, the Programme Director (or appropriate nominee) must take them to HR in order for their passport to be verified. If this process is not followed, the External Examiner cannot be considered a temporary employee and therefore will not be paid once their report is received.
